One vineyard. Three generations.
Shepherd’s Hut was established by the Wishart family in 1996. The first vines were planted by my grandparents, Michael and Valerie Wishart and my parents, Phil and Cathy Wishart. I am the third generation to look after Shepherd's Hut.
Our vineyard and wine label take their name from an 1850s stone hut found in ruins on our property. Built of beautiful honey-coloured Mount Barker sandstone, the hut originally sheltered local shepherds grazing their flocks along the Kalgan River. Over time it served many practical purposes, from hay shed to piggery, before falling into disrepair.
Stone by stone, we carefully relocated and rebuilt the hut (in keeping with its original style and heritage) as we planted our first vines on the north-facing slopes of our sheep and cattle farm. Today it overlooks the vineyard, with sweeping views across to the Porongurup and Stirling Ranges.
-LauraWe are a boutique label producing cool-climate, single-vineyard wines. We have a strong focus on quality over quantity and believe that by looking after our little patch, we can grow exceptional fruit and make wines that speak for themselves.
We believe wine should be honest and approachable, rather than overthought or intimidating. Whether you’re well-versed or just starting out, we want our wines to feel welcoming. After all, your taste is personal, and the only “right” way to enjoy wine is the way that feels best for you.
Serious about quality. Relaxed about wine.
